Fernando in his early days of Oxnard, California was best known as Fernando Javier Vargas and he used to earn his basic training of boxing from Eduardo Garcia and later succeeded to make a pleasant record of 100-5 as an amateur. He in his adulthood got married to Martha Lopez Vargas and as couple they had 3 boy child and one girl baby. The family together appeared in a reality show known as “Mun2”.

Initial Stage

In the early stage, he was declared as the winner of 132 lb champions trophy held in 1992 at Junior Olympics Box-Offs. And soon, he was declared as the youngest fighter of U.S. Championships. He became a part of U.S. Olympic team with the advent of 1996. But, he had lost the 2nd round decision due to the controversy raised.

He made his professional debut in 1997 with the defeat of Jorge Morales within a fraction of second. Later in 1998, he was declared as the winner of IB light middleweight championship. But, he could not retain this title for longer time and lost it to Felix Trinidad, in 2000. In 2001, he won the vacant title WBA Light Middleweight, after defeating Jose Alfredo Flores.  One of the biggest fights in the world of boxing was for the title Oscar De La Hoya that was held at Las Vegas in 2002 but, Vargas had lost the match. After this, he had lost all of the matches that were held in the consecutive years. In 2006, he had lost both matches to Sugar Shane Mosley and further in 2007 had to suffer a loss opposite to Ricardo Mayorga. Finally, he ended his boxing career with a professional record of 26-5.

Controversies That Ruined His Career

He is known to be a professional who is always involved in controversies and even had been punished for it too. In 2001, he had to serve 90 days of imprisonment for the charges related to assault in 1999. In the year 2002, while Oscar De La Hoya championship he was found to be drug addicted. This lead to the confirmation after after drug testing at the end of the fight leading to suspension of Vargas for the tenure of 9 month due to the use of steroid.
