Gennady Golovkin is one of the most feared Kazakh boxers in the world today and is worth at least $5.4 million. He rose to fame by fighting in the 2004 Summer Olympics where he claimed the silver medal in the middleweight category. Golovkin was born in Karagandy in Kazakhstan and was one of the four sons of a coal miner father and a Korean mother who was an assistant in a chemical laboratory. He was pushed into the ring by his older brothers and by the time he was eight, they had both joined the Russian Army. Both his brothers were killed during battle and there were no details given by the government officials.
Spurred on by this tragedy at the age of 14, he began focussing his energy and potential toward boxing. He would fight and challenge random guys on the street to sharpen his skill and he claims that this early training was one of the factors for his success.
His first big triumph came during the 2003 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Bangkok where he won the gold medal by defeating two-time champion Matvey Korobov, Andy Lee and Lucian Bute amongst others.
During the 2004 Summer Olympics, he came into his own and beaten Ramadan Yasser Abdelghafar and Andre Dirrell before finally losing out to Russian, Gaydarbek Gaydarbekov.
He lost the 2005 World Championships shockingly to Mohamed Hikal. He finally completed his amateur career with a brilliant record of 345-5.
He moved to professional by signing a contrat with Universum and made his debut in 2006. By 2008, he had a record of 14-0. He opted out of Universum and signed with K2 and began training with Abel Sanchez and won the WBA Middleweight Title in 2010, the biggest highlight of his career.
He owns properties both at Big Bear, California as well as Germany, where he likes to spend his time whilst not fighting. He is married to Alina and has a son Vadim in Primary School. He is fluent in Kazakh, German, Russian and English.
