Research reveals:
- Women have better colour vision than men
- Men perform better for in-depth perception
- 70-79 year olds scored highest in depth perception test
- Hazel eyes are better at colour vision, brown close behind.
- Grey eyes rule over all in depth perception test
- Poor sleep negatively affects depth perception and colour vision
Tuesday 29th March [London] –
Shocking results from two eye tests prove that vision is the battle of the sexes.
Battle of the Sexes
Women have better colour vision (13%) than men (10%) according to research performed by leading eye health experts Contact Lenses UK. Over 2000 of their UK based customers took part in the research which delved into how age, eye colour and gender can impact our eye health nationwide. Men took the lead when it comes to depth perception with 11% scoring the highest possible score compared to 10% of women.
The Research was developed by contactlenses.co.uk to explore the Nation’s Eye health by analysing participants ‘colour vision’ and ‘perception’.
These tests have now been made available to the public over on their website:
- How Good Is Your Colour Vision Test – Participants were asked if they could spot different shapes in squares of various colours.
- Can You Spot It – Participants were asked if they could spot items in 6 different settings to test their perception and focus
Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number
The standard thinking is that age can play a part in the deterioration of eyesight and vision, but interestingly the older generations performed better in the “depth perception” game with a whopping 33% of 70-79-year-olds finding 80 percent of the items. In comparison, just 23% of 18-29-year-olds scored in the top 80 percent which raises a lot of questions around Generation Z and Millenial’s eye health.
In comparison, the younger group scored higher in the colour vision test, but only by a small margin, which is not what most would expect. Surprisingly only 2% of 18-29 year olds answered all questions correctly whereas 1% of the groups aged 30-69 scored full marks. No one in the 70-89 bracket scored full marks. The reasons for vision deterioration can vary, and it is not just age. Medication, screen time, incorrect prescriptions and diet can all impact eye health.
More Than Just Beauty Sleep
Sleep is necessary in order to replenish the eyes and function well throughout the day. In both games, those who did not sleep did not perform as well as those who slept well, or only partially struggled sleeping. In the colour vision test, only 1% of those sleeping poorly found 11 images or more. 54% of the poor sleep group couldn’t find more than 6, well over half of the group compared to just 33% of those who slept well.
Lack of sleep doesn’t just affect colour vision, but also depth perception. Only 9% of the poor sleep group spotted all 6 items. Interestingly, both the poor and good sleep groups had the same percentage of those who could not find any image (4%). If your job needs you to be careful with colour, you should really get some sleep! Interior designer nap time, anyone?
Can Eye Colour Have An Impact On Eyesight?
While most people would not expect eye colour to have any influence, there does seem to be a winner in each game. In the colour vision eye test, Hazel eyes performed the best, whereas in the depth perception test Grey eyes scored highest, although it was very close in both tests.
Hazel eyes top the colour vision test, with 6% of participants identifying 10 pictures or more. Brown and green eyes were joint second, both with 5% of participants identifying 10 pictures or more. Grey eyes lost this one, with 3% of participants spotting less than 2 pictures.
Grey eyes, do not cry! In the depth perception test, 13% of grey participants found all 6 items in the depth perception test, narrowly beating 12% of brown eyed participants but still coming up top. A whopping 32% found 5 or more items, 5% more than brown, who was in second place with 27% finding 5 or more items. Green eyes lost this game overall, with 18% of participants finding 1 or less, although 1% more of Hazel eyes couldn’t find any items at all.
